As the new DSM-5 and associated controversy lumbers to its end, I thought I’d revisit the issue.
As anyone working in mental health will be aware, there’s a new DSM coming out in May 2013. It’s designed by committee which is often a recipe for disaster.
There are lots of areas of controversy (which other blogs have covered in great detail) including messing around with what is and isn’t “grief”, how personality disorders are defined (in a way that ensures no one ever gets treatment through their insurance) and some odd definitions of what constitutes addiction. There is talk of the seemingly ever-present desire to get the world onto expensive prescription drugs and of course some traditional committee walk-outs.
It sounds messy, over-complicated, generally not in the interest of anyone needing help with their mentals.. and I still don’t think they’ll be happy until it’s the size of a planet.
